Biological, Biomedical and Combined Sciences Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate broad science content knowledge in the life sciences and be able to describe fundamental concepts in the life sciences.
  2. Demonstrate broad science content knowledge in the physical sciences and be able to describe fundamental concepts in the physical sciences.
  3. Use quantitative information to obtain sound results and recognize questionable assumptions.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the broad principles of science and the ways scientists in a particular discipline conduct research.
  5. Make observations, understand the fundamental elements of experiment design, generate and analyze data using appropriate quantitative tools, use abstract reasoning to interpret the data and formulate and test hypotheses with scientific rigor.
  6. Understand how findings and ideas in science can be applied to explain phenomena and events and influence the larger society.
  7. Communicate about science using appropriate oral and written means.
  8. Demonstrate proficiency in the collection, interpretation and presentation of scientific data.

This degree program is designed to integrate an interdisciplinary core of studies with cross-disciplinary flexibility. Students choose a primary concentration of study and select courses from diverse disciplines to supplement and enhance their degree program. The Interdisciplinary Studies major in Science and Mathematics prepares students for entry-level positions in industry, government, and allied health professions.

General University Course Requirements


The following courses are required for all bachelor level degrees: 36-39 credits

Fine Arts: 3 credits


Any studio-based fine arts course (ART, MUS, DRMA), or ENG 206A , or ENG 206B  

Laboratory Science: 4 credits


Any laboratory science course except CHEM 105

Social Sciences: 3 credits


Any social science course (ECON, POSC, SOC, PSY)

Humanities: 3 credits


Any HIS course, ENG 200 PHIL 310W , or REL 320W  

Mathematics: 3-5 credits


Any college-level MATH course or SOC 220  

World Language: 3-4 credits


Any world language course

Technology: 3 credits


Any CPSC course or BADM 230 BIOL 482 ,  ENG 452 ENSC 321 ART 370 NURS 304 ED 343   

Primary Concentration (upper division): 24 credits


Choose one: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or Math

Secondary Concentration (upper division): 18 credits


Choose one: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Mathematics, or another department, or Combined Secondary (upper division) (12 credits per secondary focus) 24 credits

Electives (0-6 upper division): 26-32 credits


Minimum of 126 credits required, including 48 upper-division credits.
