Organizational Leadership, Specialization in English as a Second Language (ESL5): 34 credits

The Heritage University graduate program provides a Master of Education degree in Organizational Leadership with a specialization in English as a Second Language (ESL). This is a specialized program designed to prepare educators who anticipate a career working with English language learners.

Program Goals


The primary purpose of the program is to provide quality professional study to enable educators to positively impact the academic achievement of English language learners. Educators completing this program will receive the knowledge, necessary tools, and support to be successful in the challenging work of effectively teaching and working with English language learners.

The program is designed to do the following:

  1. Build professional learning communities that support teacher knowledge and skills that facilitate culturally responsive teaching across the system
  2. Apply current research and instructional strategies designed to increase student achievement of all English language learners in schools, with the effect of closing the achievement gap
  3. Receive training on pedagogy that fosters equity, inclusion, and empowerment of students, parents, and the overall community
  4. Plan, implement, and manage appropriate instructional environments that provide the necessary curriculum adaptations and modifications to ensure student success
  5. Produce a qualified candidate with an ESL endorsement or equivalent
  6. Meet OSPI and state standards for all English language learners

English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement


6 Candidates must pass the specifically required WEST-E and any required pedagogical assessments before any endorsement will be recommended.

5 The endorsement for English as a Second Language is called English Language Learner (ELL) by the State of Washington’s certification office.
